Alternative to Begging |
Sept 2009
Calendar
Celsi, Age 6-7 |
Many tourists know this cute child and Sera, her 12 year old sister. For 4 years, they are begging nightly, 8pm - 4am at discotheques and bars. Celsi doesn’t like the ‘road’, but her parents, who don’t work, are angry if the children don’t bring home enough money. The father ‘gambles chickens’. Their earnings equal a good job salary in Bali. Security catch the children frequently, and have dumped them 40km away at night to walk back. The children sleep when they can in slum housing. The Yayasan helps them with medical - dental problems, picks them up by motorbike, gets them showers, clean uniforms, and to school. Later they get taken back so they can keep begging. They both want to be teachers. |

PAINTING CLASS TURNED INTO BUSINESS!
|
Greetings cards, Calendars, & Paintings
As a natural outgrowth of 'painting class', the children started a 'greeting card' project that blossomed into cards, calendars, and paintings being sold around Bali, and now in several countries..
This project started with the vision of a volunteer, and continues to expand. The children benefit with some income, the Yayasan at times is able to continue meeting their daily needs, and importantly, the children are learning and gaining self confidence in this creative endeavor.

The children are learning business techniques, accounting, etc, choose what to do with their earnings, and the goal is for each to have a bank account.
During school break last December, the children went back to their villages and choose to give their parents their first non-begging contribution, from their business.
This is the beginnings of changing a cultures negative ways, teaching valuable positive skills and experiences to the children, and is the beggings of a productive and rewarding future for them.
