YKPA: Helping Bali Street Children

YKPA helps street children in Bali.

We provide a caring home, schooling, and a new life, currently for 20 children in the orphanage. We provide shelter for sick, tired, or traumatized children, sometimes against the orders of their boss. For those children not yet able to leave the streets, we offer reading and math classes on a tarp at the beach and in the slum for another 50 kids.

Underlying our work is AIDS and abuse prevention; the hope of stopping a young teen girl from becoming a prostitute, and a teen boy being a 'boss' to young children who must beg.

YKPA needs help to continue and to grow. Adequate funds are not sure, there are many more children needing help, and projects aimed at prevention require funds.

MISSION: To give loving support, education, care, and skills for disadvantaged children to have the opportunity of a satisfying and productive life as good citizens

YKPA is an Indonesian non-profit organization and is non-denominational.

STREET CHILDREN PROJECTS

Beach school
Bali street children want to learn but have no opportunity. We give reading, math, and art classes on the beach or in city slums. The children receive nutritous meals, get injuries assessed, practice new social skills, and learn to trust the staff and volunteer teachers...(more)

Teens read
Young street children grow into their teens no longer looking cute enough to beg successfully from tourists. They can, however 'boss' a younger sibling to beg for them, continuing abuse of another generation, or they can enter sex-related work. They cannot read but want to learn... (more)

Many children in Bali can not go to school or finish even elementary school because of their families poverty. Street children can not go to school for more reasons. It costs very little to help a child have the chance of education... (more)

Village poverty

Income producing project

The children's artwork is popular with tourists, and has turned into greeting cards, Christmas cards, and a calendar. Other products include dolls (see photo to right), and reusable shopping bags.

Street Children Dance Group

After many months of dance classes, the Yayasan children now are giving Balinese dance performances at various venues around the area.
